My name is Brooklynne or just Brooke for short (most people call me Brooke) and if you are one of my 5th grade ESL students here in Spain, you’ll probably call me “Broke” or “Brooook.” I am a 24 year-old University of New Mexico college graduate from California. I studied community health and psychology, receiving a bachelors of science from the College of Education, graduating in May of 2017.
After graduating, I traveled for a few months and decided that a great way to continue exploring the world is through teaching English. I chose to teach in Spain because I’ve had a few friends who had taught English in Madrid and was inspired by their experiences. Their positive reflections, paired with my desire to learn Spanish as a second language helped to guide me to where I am today. A few friends from college (some of my best friends) also had plans to come teach here, which was further motivation to make the move myself (and now I live them them!).
I grew up in Orange County, California in a school system that only teaches in English as most everywhere else in the United States does (except for foreign language courses). The only exposure to second language education was in high school where students are required to take 2 years of a foreign language. I have a great admiration for the young ESL learners I teach because of my own single language education.
I am currently living 15 minutes outside of Madrid’s city center and working in the very south of Madrid. Having this amazing opportunity to live and work in Spain has allowed me to realize my dreams of traveling often, meeting awesome people from all over the world, and learning more about myself and what my future profession(s) may or may not be. I am so grateful to have this opportunity to learn and love life here in Spain.
